Overtime: Nike refutes deal with Vick

By Melva N. Lloyd

Just hours after reports surfaced yesterday that Michael Vick signed a new endorsement deal with Nike, spokesmen for the company deny that they’ve agreed to do business with the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback; saying that “it does not have a contractual relationship” with Vick. 90156672

The former Atlanta Falcon signed a deal with Nike during his rookie season in 2001.  Until 2007, that partnership produced several different versions of his exclusive sneakers; and although the business relationship was severed when Vick pled guilty to dogfighting charges two years ago, his return to the football field has allowed him to receive apparel from Nike.  However, Nike spokesman Kejuan Wilkins released a statement to CNBC on Wednesday insisting that although they have supplied Vick with shoes, it’s something that they do with “a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike.”

Comments made by Vick’s camp seemed to spark confusion about whether or not he would be re-entering into a deal with the shoe titan.  Vick’s agent, Joel Segal, seemingly backed up remarks made by members of Vick’s camp that suggested he was back on good terms with Nike.

It’s still not clear if the VA Tech Alum and Nike are in talks to strike up a new deal or if they have ended all ties indefinitely.  But there will be more on this story as it develops.
