by: Randi M.

Thousands of people waited in line today to get an application for housing assistance at a convention center in Detroit. The city was planning to offer money to 3,500 families. People became upset when there were no more applications. People started pushing and shoving one another, and the Detroit Police Dept’s Gang Squad was called to keep people under control. No arrests were made. Some people waiting had to receive medical treatment from passing out or exhaustion.

1 in  4 adults that are able to work in Detroit are unemployed. The city has handed out over 50,000 applications in the past few days. There are certain criteria in order to receive the assistance. If approved, each applicant will receive a maximum of $3,000.
