Overtime: Yankees Look Like Their Old Selves

By Melva N. Lloyd

It has been a long two years since the New York Yankees have made a playoff appearance; in 2007 they were eliminated from the American League Division Series by the Cleveland Indians, resulting in the former World Champs letting go their long-time manager Joe Torre.  But last night the Bronx Bombers took to the field in the new Yankee Stadium looking like the baseball team that won the World Series back in 2000.

In front of a crowd of over 40,000 cheering fans which included actress Kate Hudson and rapper Jay-Z, The Yanks’ postseason opener against the Minnesota Twins brought out the best in Alex Rodriguez, C.C. Sabathia and team captain Derek Jeter.  A third-inning homer by Jeter evened the game at two a piece and that followed with a two-run homer from Hideki Matsui.  From there, the boys in blue would breeze to a 7-2 win and a 1-0 lead in the playoff series.

Under the management of Joe Girardi, the Yankees run towards yet another championship pennant continues tomorrow when they try to extend their lead to 2-0 against the Texas Rangers; a win tomorrow would be their first back-to-back victories in ten years.
