Cultivate It: It Takes More than Brushing Your Teeth

By: Tiffani Haynes

Oral hygiene is so much more than chewing gum and flossing. Sometimes oral problems, like bad breath, can be an indication to a bigger health problem.

While some mild bad breath may come from eating certain foods, a harsher, more chronic problem may be a sign of health issues. Some bad breath health problems are gum diseases, tooth decay and throat or mouth cancer. Yet some stench problems can be digestive disorders, diabetes, HIV, liver disease and lung disease.

Mouth sores are another sign of health problems. People with mouth sores can have a lack of iron, folic acid or B-12. All of these vitamins come in pill form and increasing your daily intake could eliminate mouth sores.

Bleeding gums are also a sign of health issues. While it is normal for your gums to bleed occasionally, if your gums are bleeding more heavily and frequently, it could be a sign of gingivitis, anemia, or lack of vitamin K or C.

Healthy oral hygiene only works well when it is paired with a healthy regime. While brushing your teeth regularly, flossing and using mouthwash does wonders for the mouth, it isn’t enough. Try improving your diet and increasing your daily vitamin schedule. You’ll see an instant improvement.
