After a mass shooting erupted on the Fort Hood military base in Fort Hood, Texas, 12 were found dead and 31 wounded. It was said the gunman, Major Malik Nadal Hasan, was later killed by authorities, but it has been revealed that he is alive and in custody.

Hasan, who was a mental health professional at the base, opened fire around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Soldier Readiness Center. The Center houses medical screening for soldiers who are about to be deployed or those that are returning to the base. Hasan was set for deployment though it was unclear his destination or time frame for leaving. He had also on been at Fort Hood since July.

It has been unclear the motive or exact profession, whether psychologist or psychiatrist, of Hasan. Authorities also haven’t been able to identify if Hasan is his real name, or one he assumed after he converted to another religion.

Others were notified about the shooting when a wounded soldier ran from the Center to the base’s graduation ceremony and alerted Greg Schanepp, U.S. Rep. John Carter’s regional director who was representing Carter at the ceremony.

After the shooting the base was locked down and security has been increased. According to the Associated Press, “The bottom line for us is that we are increasing security at our gates because the threat hasn’t yet been defined, and we’re reminding our Marines to be vigilant in their areas of responsibility,” said Capt. Rob Dolan, public affairs officer for the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz.

Several public figures have spoken out about the shooting, including President Barack Obama.

“In Washington, President Barack Obama called the shooting ‘a horrific outburst of violence.’ He said it’s a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil.”
