On Monday, police found five-year-old Shaniya Davis in a rural town 30 miles outside her Fayetteville, NC neighborhood. Police, volunteers and family members had been searching for the young girl when she was found dead.

Later that day, Davis’ twenty-five-year-old mother, Antoinette, and two men were arrested as suspects for child prostitution. While one man was released, Antoinette was charged with human trafficking and felony child abuse. The woman had been prostituting her own child.

Davis had been living with her father, Bradley Lockhart, for several years and only recently moved with her mother. Lockhart and Antoinette had reached an agreement to allow the child to move, though some family members disagreed. Lockhart’s sister, Carey Lockhart-Davis, thought Antoinette was neglectful to her children.

According to the Associated Press, “Antoinette and I never really got along because of the way that she neglected her children,” Lockhart-Davis said. “I feel robbed. I feel that Shaniya was robbed.”

People gather to remember Shaniya Davis.

Police and neighbors conducted the week-long search after Antoinette reported her missing from their mobile home. Investigators are still awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of Davis’ death.

Community members held a candlelight vigil today for Davis. Many gathered with their children to mourn the young girl’s life.

  1. I honestly almost cried when I first read about this story. I can’t believe someone would do this to a child. I don’t wish bad on anyone, but karma is gonna whoop that woman’s ass.

  2. I hope she suffers every second of the rest of her life!
