According to the Associated Press, Brian Thomas has been freed of charges for killing his wife, Christine, during a nightmare of fighting off intruders while sleeping in their camper van. Thomas has suffered from a sleep disorder for quite some time and was in a state of automatism when he strangled his wife.
Originally prosecutors had requested he be found not guilty by insanity but later withdrew the charge after determining a psychiatric hospital would do him no good.
“It is now clear that the psychiatrists feel that that would serve no useful purpose and the risk of reoccurrence is very, very small,” Iwan Jenkins, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Dyfed Powys region in Wales told the Associated Press. “We therefore have offered no further evidence and asked the jury to return a simple verdict of not guilty.”
The British couple had been married 40 years and have two daughters.
