Two Washington Wizards players were involved in a Christmas Eve gambling dispute that resulted in guns being drawn while in the team locker room.

The New York Post reported that an argument ensued between Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton when Arenas refused to pay a debt that was owed to Crittenton.  Although sources said that Arenas drew his firearm first, the three-time NBA All-Star denies that he ever showed his weapon.

The incident occurred during a Wizards practice day at the Verizon Center in downtown Washington, D.C.  It is still unclear whether or not any other Wizards players witnessed the altercation.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said Friday that there is “an active investigation” being conducted by Washington law enforcement authorities. “We are not taking any independent action at this time,” he added.

CBS.com broke a story that investigated Arenas’, 27,  gun possession.  The Wizards organization released a statement saying that Arenas had stored three unloaded firearms in a locked box inside his Verizon Center locker.  Arenas has said he removed the guns from his home to keep them away from his three young children.

League sources say that commissioner David Stern could subject both Arenas and Crittenton to suspension and fines.

Arenas is in the second season of his six-year $111 million contract with the Wizards.  Crittenton, who turned 23 on Thursday, hasn’t played for the Wizards this season; he is rehabbing from preseason foot surgery.   He was the 19th pick in the 2007 NBA draft out of Georgia Tech and played for the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies before being traded to Washington early last season.
