In the News: Obama’s Year One…Done

By Christopher A.L. Swails

In years before our time, President John F. Kennedy told us not to ask what our country can do for us but rather what can we do for our country. Now as we face an unemployment rate of 10% while lost in the fog of the most severe economic crisis since the 1980’s, many are now wondering what the country can do for us. Nonetheless, today we celebrate President Obama’s first year in the.. black White House. So what has the Obama team done so far?

  • Jan. 2009– Signed an executive order to close the military prison camp Guantanamo Bay in one calendar year.
  • Jan. 2009– Deployed 17,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan.
  • Feb. 2009– Signed the $800 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law.
  • May 2009– Nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • Jul. 2009– Introduced a preliminary health care reform bill.
  • Oct. 2009– Won the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Dec. 2009– Ordered 30,000 additional U.S. soldiers to Afghanistan and sets a 2011 exit deadline.
  • Jan. 2010– Pledged $100 million to Haiti relief efforts.

There has been major debate on whether President Obama has delivered on the promises included in his campaign. Members of both sides weigh in on this video. Check it out and LEAVE COMMENTS.
