Serena Williams won her second straight Australian Open Title when she defeated the comeback kid, Justine Henin in three sets on Saturday: 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. This brings her Aussie Open championship titles to five, and this her first time winning the Grand Slam title in an even year.
With this victory, Williams has tied tennis great, Billie Jean King, with 12 overall Grand Slam singles championships. Her five Australian Open titles are the most won by any female tennis player since 1968; surpassing the likes of Steffi Graf and Monica Seles.
Henin returned to the tournament title after a year-long retirement, hoping to find success and win her second Australian Open Title since 2004. She was unseeded coming into this tournament and defeated four ranked players before reaching the final. Her comeback was derailed when she met Williams who went on to win the last four games of the match.
Before winning the championship, Williams took home the doubles title with her sister Venus on Friday. Venus was eliminated from the singles tournament in the quarterfinals; losing in three sets to China’s Na Li.
Serena Williams now has her eye on a singles record held by Chris Evert Martina Navratilova. The former champs hold 18 major titles.
