1991 – L.A. resident Rodney King was severely beaten by three LAPD officers while the whole incident was caught on tape. The officers were eventually acquitted of assault charges, the verdict sparked the 1992 LA riots.

1931 – Francis Scott Key’s poem ‘The Star-Spangled Banner” was officially named the US national anthem.

1885 – The AT&T telephone company is incorporated.
