Being that April is celebrated as National Poetry Month, I felt it befitting to do a profile feature on Maya Angelou. Plus the legend just celebrated her 82nd birthday on the fourth of this month. The lyrical icon was

born in St. Louis in 1928 and grew up in Stamps Arkansas. She dropped out of school at the young age of 14, when she began making history early by becoming the first Black cable car conductor in San Francisco.

Throughout her 20’s, Angelou recorded her first album, Calypso Lady, toured Europe with an opera, and dance with Alvin Ailey.  Angelou also worked as editor of the The Arab Observer in Egypt and the The African Review in Ghana.

The icon also served on 2 presidential committees and has received over 30 honorary degrees. Today Dr. Angelou is an acclaimed poet, writer, and novelist.  Her contribution to not only African-American history, but also American history, is timeless.
