Status Release: Trina, Toni Braxton and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

By: Tiffani Haynes

Don’t call it a comeback, these folks don’t believe they’re making a comeback. To them, they never left.

These three artists have new albums emerging today after a hiatus from the game. Trina’s letting you know she’s Amazin’, Toni’s ready to put the Pulse back in R and B and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony don’t mind being Uni5: The World’s Enemy.

Today, Trina is releasing her fifth studio album Amazin’. The former first lady of Slip-N-Slide has cameos from Nicki Minaj, Keri Hilson, Trey Songz, Monica, Diddy and a host of others. Trina’s first single “Million Dollar Girl” featuring Diddy and Keri has hit the airwaves and given listeners a glimpse of what they can hope to hear on Trina’s album.

“My fans can expect to embrace my versatility and growth, professionally and personally. I am truly excited to share my new album with my fans. I worked with wonderful artists…” Trina told BET.

Trina’s a little rough around the edges for me but one thing can’t be denied, she’s stayed in the game longer than a lot of female rap artists and she’s still pulling features. The self-proclaimed “Baddest Chick” is back….

After Toni’s steamy kiss with Trey Songz on the 2009 Soul Train awards, it’s safe to say the 40-plus diva hasn’t lost it at all. At least not the ability to make every woman envious.  The two performed her first single “Yesterday” off her latest project, Pulse. Toni is releasing her sixth studio album on her Atlantic Records label with features from Trey Songz, Usher and Robin Thicke.

I’ve always been a mild Toni fan, mostly because of her ability to rock a short cut for decades and still look good, but her throaty voice has always been catchy too. Who can’t help slipping into their tenor voice to belt out “Just Be a Man About It?”

It’s been more than 15 years since the five-member rap group has produced an album. After legal woes and years apart, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are back with their latest project, Uni5: The World’s Worst Enemy.

Krayzie Bone, Wish Bone, Flesh-N-Tone Bone, Layzie Bone and Bizzy Bone will be releasing the group’s ninth album on their own label, BTNH Worldwide, with distribution by Warner Bros. In March, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony launched a new 34-city tour starting in Minneapolis.

No matter how much music they come out with, I always flash back to the “Crossroads” video. Men in cornrows and passing as angels is hard to forget.

Status Release: Curren$y, Erykah Badu, Usher

Currens$y “Pilot Talk”

If you think you don’t know who Curren$y is, I almost guarantee you do. This New Orleans based artist burst onto the Hip-Hop scene as part of Lil Wayne’s Young Money imprint where he released this classic HU student center banger.

His time under Weezy was short lived however and he moved on to take the underground scene by storm. He’s flooded the mixtape market with free downloads before releasing his debut album “This Aint’ No Mixtape.” Since then he’s hooked up with Dame Dash for the second installment into his official discography which allegedly hits the net today after a March 23rd push back.

You’ll more than likely have to search online to find it but it might be worth it…Curren$y’s Pilot Talk “allegedly” drops today.

Erykah Badu “New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh”

Erkyah Badu made a stellar PR movie dropping the video (and her clothes) for “Window Seat.” The mother of three from Jay Electronica, Andre 3000 and D.O.C. is releasing her new album today which should promise to be filled with the classic Baduism fans have grown to know and love.

The Washington Post did a review on it and described it saying,

“There’s something unhurried and aloof about “Return of the Ankh,” but 39-year-old Badu still sings with a magnetism that compels us to follow her to and fro….

If you missed it…shame on you.

Check out NewAmerykah getting racy in her controversial video for “Window Seat.”

Usher “Raymond v.s Raymond”

Usher’s new album drops today and I have a gut feeling that today wasn’t the best release date for the new project. Usher’s gotten buzz around his singles “Hey Daddy” and “Lil Freak” but will it be substantial enough to drive sales for today’s release?

In my opinion, NO.

Ursh probably should’ve waited till about May to generate more buzz and drop a few more singles but, what do I know?

According to SMG’s own Sarah J, it might be worth the buy.

She gives it 3 out of 5 stars and gave Usher his props on it saying,

“This album takes more than one listen as it grows with each spin, and there is some great lyrical content hidden in several of the tracks.”

Just in time for today’s release Usher dropped a new video, “OMG” featuring Will.I.Am of the Blackeyed Peas.

Not sure what’s missing here but Usher’s gotta come harder if he wants to keep up with the person currently in R&B’s top spot, Trey Songz.
