To say she didn’t want kids is an understatement. Irene Vilar had 15 abortions over a period of 17 years, from ages 16 to 33. She tells her story in her new memoir, “Impossible Motherhood: Testimony of an Abortion Addict.”

Vilar describes her addiction to terminating pregnancies in the book and compares it to drug addiction.

“Of course, this did not mean I wanted to do it again and again,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “A druggie also wants to stop every time.”

She had her first abortion at age 16, after her 50-year-old husband told her children ruined sexual desire.

Though she went on to have two children with her second husband, she had several suicide attempts and self-mutilation episodes, along with the abortions.

While Vilar has shared her addiction story, she had a few determents. She was rejected 51 times before she found a publisher to print her book. She also was weary of reactions to the book and her safety. To protect herself, Vilar has agreed to only closed-door interviews and won’t be promoting the book with a tour. She’s also removed herself from public records.
